I watched Nine Inch Nails video for "Perfect Drug" and saw Edgar Allan Poe novels come to life. Gothic, sublime and beautiful. I've followed Mark Romanek's work since then. And he's created a litany of visually captivating music videos.
I just read that he's directing a film called Never Let Me Go.

It's a film adaption from a book by Kazou Ishiguro; the same man who penned Remains of the Day. Though the it's a bit early to speculate, I'm getting a vibe of Logan's Run meets Merchant Ivory set in a bleak, rural boarding school. And what's the elusive "donation" they speak of? I wonder if there will be a raven tap tap tapping. I can't wait.

Last night my friend and I were driving one another batty playing Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon over the phone. So an idea struck while "Chuck Norrising"--Why does it have to be Kevin Bacon? There are plenty of actors and actresses that have a plethora of work in their arsenal; ones that I actually like. That's when the idea surfaced--Seven Degrees of Parker Posey! She's been in so many films from Party Girl to the Blade Franchise, super indie to summer big budget; It'll be fun to read what people come up with.

I mean, WTF? I'm a proponent of stories about unrequitted, messy love--especially, Bronte-esque style, but these two...I hate the how their story culminated--after four seasons of palpable tension and the kind of chemistry that piqued my interest to the very end, his only want was to climb mountains and explore world while she simply disappeared. Bloody hell. Not that I expected them to live happily ever after but how can that possibly be the ending to the episode pictured above; the episode where they had to beat each other into a bloody pulp, just to admit they missed one another. Its almost absurd how the ferocity of their love/hate relationship was dismissed by irrelevant flashbacks--an "Oh, by the way..." interjection. I'm disappointed when writers take the predictably tidy right. But alas, I do forget that the series was about finding Earth not the story of Heathcliff and Catherine.

I'm always compelled by Wes Anderson's movies. They're terribly anachronistic; the characters existing only in an Andersonian paradigm-one that I've always wanted to be a part of, especially on Halloween. I've wanted to be Margot for sometime but something is always off. Our costumes are brilliant this year thanks to the ideas and coaching of Cat&Es, but perhaps I'll don the wooden finger as my homage. I thrive better under gray clouds and rain. However,the storm that just passed through scared the bejesus out of me. Scared because I thought the arcahic trees on our property would be uprooted and thrown through the house. Luckily, no such damage. The naughty storm just broke one tree in half.

It's as if that particular branch grew tired of the tumultuous winds and decided to rest atop the garage. Shame our fireplace is electric.

I love Halloween. It's this combination of sublimated, archaic Celtic traditions and childish shenanigans that give the season this balance of scary and silly. I watched Mike Daugherty's film, Trick R' Treat, last night and it was exactly that. There are four intersecting vignettes, cautionary much in the vein of The Twilight Zone but playful like Spielberg's Amazing Stories. I won't say more than that.

Don't let the poster fool you though, there's enough humor throughout the film, to make Sam, the burlap-headed thing above, endearing. As one reviewer stated, it's a love letter to Halloween.

I've been watching an increasing amount of TV to DVD shows this past month. I just finished the second season of Californication; I love Hank Moody; he's someone I'd love to hang out with. Well, at least to hear more of these.

I like Coldplay. There, I admitted it. I may not like the band members but I certainly enjoy their music. It brings to question a certain hypocrisy. Does morality come to play when judging one's talent. Is excusable to be an ass hole simply because one is brilliant? Historically, the ass hole part is inconsequential. But then again, those with kind and warm personalities, typically do not seek greatness.
It's like this Steinbeck quote my dad taught me when I was very young. “It always seemed strange to me that the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self interest are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first, they love the produce of the second.”

I'm intrigued by a new game I've downloaded on my phone. Intrigued because it's slightly creepy and oddly satisfying. It's as if this was the game spawn from union of Tim Burton and David Lynch. The game consists of a wooden object in various animal shapes and a determined length of rope. There is no time limit, rather the object of the game is to bind as much of the objects surface with finite rope length. The soundtrack again is Lynch-Burton-esque. The developers, Secret Exit, call it "Zen Bound" but I have my doubts that one can reach enlightenment through bondage, well, in a game anyways

I like Cold Wards Kids, particularly their early attempts. The messy, cymbal driven arrangements and the sort of lazy drawl turn manic yawlp in Nathan Willet's voice, paramount in Hang Me Up to Dry. Sucks me right in. And the video, well it has a Fellini-esque streak to it that I can't look away from.
Pretty words, pretty sounds, and pretty pictures. A brilliant way to waste time.

I remember watching Ghostbusters for the first time at a drive-in theater. I was young enough not to mind squeezing between my parents in the front seat of Ford station wagon. Not that there wasn't enough room. If you've seen that particular model in it's wood-grain splendor, you'll know the size is comparable to a hearse. I squeezed in for reassurance only a mom and dad will give at the age when we're afraid of the darkness under our beds and in our closets. Remember the sequence in the movie when Slimer appears in the hotel lobby? My dad turned to me and said, "Smell that? It's Slimer." Sure enough, a distinct smell drifted into the car.

To this day, I marvel at the timing, of that skunk spraying somewhere in that drive-in lot as that Slimer came charging at Bill Murray. The moment the seven year old me believed that Slimer existed. So, yeah, to indulge that skunk-smelling-Slimer believer, I can't wait for the game to be released.

I watch films to find evidence of chemistry. Overall chemistry from the page, to the camera, to the actors. A film that, as viewer, can captivate, provoke and however overt, can have subtle depth. The first film that ever moved me was Dead Poets Society. I remember reading Whitman, Thoreau, and Emerson after playing Oregon Trail on a computer with a monochromatic green monitor. But then again, I last saw Robin Williams in RV, so the brevity he once held has since passed, but I can still recite passages from Walden. Freshman year high school introduced me to Hal Hartley in the film Trust. Dialogue. Intelligent, self-effacing, and slightly monotonous dialogue. There was little else to move the romance between the late Adriene Shelley and Martin Donovan. It was convincing enough that I made all my friends watch it-they still bring it up today, "Remember when h MADE us watch Trust?". Eric's Schaeffer's Fall came by accident. Bittersweet and sexually intense, a complicated lovestory destined to be doomed. Once in a while, I'm lucky and find a few more films to adore. So this is for the the friends, dying for something different to watch. Coming soon: a brand new shiny list of my essential films.

Late night weekends are usually my time to catch-up on my obscure/indie netflix films. I've been lagging lately as my partner in crime fled the country. Unfortunately, I've grown very, very weary of big budget action films so I obligingly queued Shortbus, directed and loosely written by John Cameron Mitchell (of Hedwig and the Angry Inch fame.) Labeled and defined with terms like sex, sexuality, relationships, more sex, my expectations were low, anticipating to stop it midway. Instead, it caught my interest, having viewed it twice. Well, there is much actual sex (solitary, group, gay, straight) so its not for those puritans at heart. Many will assume that it's porn and on a pretty shallow level it is--approaching on voyeurism on the viewer. But it's not. I promise that there aren't any plumbers/pizza delivery guys/cable repairmen ringing the doorbell of a lonely housewife in any scene. Instead, there's this refuge called Shortbus where the lost and lonely come to find home. Shortbus encompasses labels critics typically handout to films briefly portraying the lives of the lovelorn and lost finding seeking and eventually finding, however momentary, redemption. Granted it's not an original concept, rather, an original approach. There's much heart in the film, you see it in the actors, you hear it in the monologues, and in the music Mitchell picked for the score. This song particularly, Language, by Scott Matthew, caught my attention.

A little melancholy but quietly triumphant. Its the kind of film you can watch on rainy days.

I was going to post a picture of a PAPUSA!. Tried it via mipapa et mimama's take out from an El Salvadorian joint on the "otherside o'town" last week. Is good. I couldn't find an appetizing photograph. Imagine a small, pale, round tortilla puck complete with grill marks, cleverly hiding the meaty/cheezy goodness inside. It did not appear appetizing when it was eagerly presented to me, but it had me at one bite. I'd love to venture to the "otherside o'town" right now to grab a couple...but alas, I can only wax poetic through the late hours.

Lately, I've had the attention span of a small child running around with a pair rusty hedge clippers. Commercial are GRRRRRRREAT! for me. Especially funny, slightly moronic ones. Saw this commercial on youtube.com and laughed heartily outloud in the middle of a seminar. I guess what I love most is that it sounds as if it were written by my friends.

YAWLP

It has been sometime since a movie has affected; maybe Dead Poets Society, a couple decades ago. One could write that Into the Wild was in the same vein. I suppose its a fascination with the notion of finding yourself and some truth away from the society. I almost cringe using the term, its broad and accusatory. And its a bit naive and idealistic to include society and truth in the same sentence.

I will write this: those who are compelled by the writings of Thoreau or Whitman, Walden in particular, will be fans of the film. (Obligatory summary to follow)Based on a true story, the film follows a young man, graduating with honors from college rooted in an upper middle class family. Instead of pursuing law school, he donates his savings to OxFam and armed with the necessities stowed in a hiker's backpack, hitchhikes through country with the ultimate goal of traveling to Alaska.

I think, in a way, its indulgent, the character, that he abandons his family, friends, and a successful future with which we in the states equate with money. Some criticisms accuse the character of being irresponsible, selfish, and being a bum. Its partially true given our social construct. But it also implies that he was a social burden, which he wasn't. He was most out of place in urban cities, in shelters, asking for handouts.

I had no inclination to watch the film. But I'm glad I did. It reminds me of a time when debt, responsibilities, and money weren't my daily worries, when I wanted to sound my "barbaric YAWLP over the rooftops of the world." Now the older me just shakes my head, cynical, unable to envision such a existence.
